Criminal News - Female Pedophilia and "The Church's Evil"

All the data of female pedophilia is dependent on what we are told. Are children frightened to come forward and report their stories through fear of being scoffed at, ridiculed or worse? Simply not believed! Is the problem much bigger than we realize? Didn't the Catholic Clergy smother their child abuse shame in the same way? Both here and abroad?

newspaper rack

The Irish Police and Catholic Church were unmasked today as collaborating in a cover up of decades of evil sexual abuse of children in their care by the clergy. The 720-page report says the official Church policy from 1975 to 2004 was to preserve the reputation and assets of the church at the expense of these vulnerable child victims. When abuse was reported, the Catholic Church simply shifted the priest to another parish.

NEWS

Priests that abused children had the full security of the Catholic Church and were simply moved from parish to parish. The report says this was a typical habit of dealing with the difficulty. There was a conspiracy to protect the church at all costs. There was no thought to protect the children.

Four Archbishops, three of which are deceased, have been named for their mishandling of hundreds of allegations.

This appalling series of abuses over decades were hidden from the public by a concerted effort of collusion by senior Irish Police and the senior ranks of the Catholic Church working together. It strongly criticizes Ireland's police force for considering the clergy as being above the law. The damning report analyzes a "representative sample" of complaints made by 320 children against 46 priests. 320 is a sample from over 2000 actual complaints. What would the final number be if you added those that haven't come forward yet?

In one case a priest admitted to assaulting more than 100 children but instead of helping those defenseless children of the parish, the clergy covered it up.

By covering up the clergy's abusive behaviour, the Church, Archbishops and Police had condemned countless other children to fall victim to what the report dubs "the church's evil".

At a press conference after the report's release, Dublin's current Archbishop, Diarmuid Martin, was contrite.

"As Archbishop of Dublin and as Diarmuid Martin a person, I offer to each and every survivor my apology, my sorrow and my shame for what happened," he said.

The Catholic Church worked with the Irish Police to suppress the facts for decades. To protect the children we must ask the unsavory question. Is the same happening with Female Pedophiles? Is our reluctance to acknowledge that female sexual abuse goes on stopping people from coming forward and giving us a true and accurate picture of this taboo subject? Abuse by Priests was also a taboo subject not that long ago but now we know the truth, no matter how sickening that truth is.

Only by knowing the truth can we fully protect our children.

Perhaps we will eventually confirm the statistics that 95% of sexual abusers of children are men or perhaps we will have to re-evaluate the whole issue of female sexual abuse.

Bad News For Hackers

Back door programs are the malicious hackers tool of choice that allows remote connections to systems. A typical back door opens a network port UDP/TCP, on the host when it is executed. Then, the listening back door waits for a remote connection from the attacker and allows the attacker to connect to the system. This is the most common type of back door functionality, which is often mixed with other Trojan like features.

newsboy hat

Another kind of back door relates to a program design flaw. Some applications, such as the early implementation of SMTP, which means simple Mail transfer protocol, allowed teachers to run a command for debugging purposes.

NEWS

The Morris Internet worm uses such a command to execute itself remotely, with the command placed as the recipient of the message on such vulnerable installations.

Fortunately, this command was quickly removed once the Morris worm exploited it. However, there can be many applications, especially newer ones, that allow for similar insecure features. This is how the attacker can make mistakes and get caught, but very few do get caught or make these mistakes.

Another type of Trojan or program, would be the password stealing Trojan's. The password stealing Trojans, are a special subclass of Trojans, this class of malicious Trojans can program and be used to capture and send a password to an attacker. As a result, an attacker can return to the vulnerable system and take whatever he or she wants. The password Stealers are often combined with key loggers to capture keystrokes when the password is typed at login.

Are the Allegations of Publishing and Media Bias in the 2008 Presidential Election Fair Or Useful?

In Orange County, California, in San Diego, CA, in Los Angeles, La Jolla, Del Mar, Pacific Beach, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Mission Beach and Escondido or the cities of Huntington Beach, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, Buena Park, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Laguna Hills, Buena Park, Temecula, Indian Wells, La Quinta, or Palm Springs, unless you haven't turned on the television or read a newspaper during the 2008 Presidential election, or looked at the internet, you have seen claims mostly by the Republican campaign that the publishing media is biased.

newport h2 keen

For the most part in this Presidential campaign, one candidate initially leveled these attacks on the press with regularity, the Republican candidate, John McCain. While newspapers expect this to some extent, the public that is not wedded to one side of the fence or the other seemed to tire of the attacks. And for publishing attorneys in California and CA election lawyers and the rest of the country, this has been the year that such attacks have all but seemed toothless and inconsequential.

NEWPORT

In the 2008 Presidential Election, John McCain denounced the New York times in the strongest words, following a Times report that McCain's campaign manager had been pain nearly million by mortgage entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. McCain's chief strategist, Steve Schmidt said the New York Times is no longer a journalistic organization but is 150 percent in the tank for Barack Obama. Schmidt earlier attacked MSNBC as being an organ of the Democratic National Committee, and said the news media are on a mission to destroy Sarah Palin.

Unfortunately for John McCain, it has since been reported in the press that McCain's campaign manager's lobbying firm owned by his campaign manager has received ,000/month for nearly three years and that and that the campaign manager was paid ,000/month for nearly five years by an advocacy organization that he headed and which was financed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to fight regulation. It has further been reported that McCain's senior advisor, his campaign's vice chairman, and his Congressional liaison, also made large sums of money from Fannie and Freddie lobbying or were in firms that did.

In an apparent attempt to deflect attention away from his mistaken attack on the New York Times story, McCain then announced he was suspending his campaign to immediately fly to Washington after awaking that morning to find a report in the Washington Post that he was behind in the polls by nine points. Soon after attempting to criticize that finding, and knowing what the disaster Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric would be aired that night, McCain chose to dump his appearance on the David Letterman show, upstage the Couric interview with his own interview on the CBS News, and announce the suspension of his campaign that was in reality, never a suspension.

In hindsight of course, McCain's actions were a huge error in judgment. His dilly-dallying around New York after ditching Letterman were picked up on and hammered at him unmercifully for two nights on the David Letterman show and later on the Daily Show, other news shows, on the internet and in the press. By the time he arrived the next day in Washington, it had already been announced that there was bipartisan support for the bailout bill, that just as quickly dissipated upon his arrival. It was reported that his campaign had not been suspended and Letterman, among others joked at his expense why he must have felt he could not leave his campaign in the hands of Sarah Palin, when she was seen incapable of answering simple questions put to her by Katie Couric. And after announcing he would not take part in the debate until there was either a bailout bill or great progress toward one, he had to fly back from Washington for the debate with no bailout bill in hand and Congress much less united than when he had arrived.

After John McCain was later skewered by David Letterman for days, there was little he could do. He could not attack David Letterman as being biased. David Letterman is not the news, he's a comedian. He has license to make jokes at candidate's expense. On top of that, McCain had not only cancelled his appearance, but David Letterman had shown his audience a live feed from CBS News of McCain getting make up applied to his face for an appearance on the CBS News with Katie Couric just a short distance away. When he later made up for his missed appearance on David Letterman two weeks later, he admitted his mistake saying, "I screwed up."

Attacking the media has long been a tactic of national candidates. In this election, once again, we have seen this tactic employed, yet with little of the success it enjoyed in previous Presidential campaigns. The spoofs of John McCain and Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live have been relentless and hilarious, and with that popularity, there has been little either candidate could do but laugh along with the American public and hope for an invitation to appear on the show themselves.

Surprisingly there have been less allegations of unfairness than one would suppose against two news channels that are well recognized fervent supporters of one candidate over another. Even the candidates have made jokes how some of the hosts on MSNBC favor Obama and how many of the hosts on Fox News favor McCain. With these jokes there now seems to be an acceptance of bias by news stations and less of an effort by newscasters to remain unbiased even on financial channels.

In the past, attacking the press has proved fruitful for Presidential candidates. This time the attack has fallen on deaf ears and has either been the exception to the rule that it will help a candidate, or there is a change taking place in what a candidate risks if he is wrong or perceived as being thin skinned.

As the election winds down and major newspapers endorsing candidates, with some newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune having never previously endorsed a Democratic party candidate for President, endorsing Obama, allegations of media bias takes to the sidelines and the electorate will decide whether they press has been fair or not, or simply doing their job.

Can You Copyright News Headlines?

This article addresses the law relating to copyright in news headlines and explores the case law relating to whether media publishers can protect their headlines as original literary works.

newspaper frame

Media companies have tried to claim copyright protection over newspaper headlines reproduced on the internet. News publishers have claimed that news headlines qualify for copyright protection as original literary works under copyright legislation. As early as 1918 in the case of International News Service v Associated Press 248 U.S. 215 the US Supreme Court has held that there can be no copyright in facts or 'news of the day'.

NEWS

However unlike in Commonwealth countries like Australia where there is no recognition of a tort of misappropriation the United States recognises a doctrine of misappropriation of hot news. This tort has enabled media publishers and other organisations to gain the right to protect other entities from publishing certain 'facts' or data, including news and other time-sensitive information during a certain window period to enable the organisation which has invested in gathering the data can recoup their investment. There are a number of criteria which must be satisfied to prevail in an action of hot news misappropriation

As stated above, Commonwealth Courts have rejected a tort of unfair competition as framed in the United States and have decided such cases solely on the basis of copyright law. Courts have been reluctant to afford literary copyright to titles, characters and news headlines. However newspaper publishers have only recently brought legal action in Australia for copyright infringement in their headlines and portions of their articles on the basis that the reproduction or abstracting of headlines is equivalent to theft of their content. Newspaper publishers have tried to obtain copyright protection in their headlines as discrete original literary works under copyright legislation.

For copyright protection to exist a literary work must exist and not every piece of writing or printing will constitute a literary work within the meaning of the law.

Typically, single words, short phrases, advertising slogans, characters and news headlines have been refused copyright protection even where they have been invented or newly coined by an author. The courts have given different reasons for denying copyright protection to such works. One reason offered by the Courts is that the 'works' are too trivial or not substantial enough to qualify for copyright protection. The case of Exxon Corporation v Exxon Insurance Consultants Ltd (1981) 3 All ER 241 is a leading English precedent where copyright was refused for the word Exxon as an original literary work.

Exxon argued it enjoyed copyright in the word Exxon having invested time and energy in employing linguists to invent the word, contending that the actual size of the literary work doesn't preclude a work from acquiring copyright protection. The court found that the work was too short or slight to amount to a copyright work.

The Court also stated that although the word was invented and original it had no particular meaning, comparing it with the word 'Jabberwocky' used for Lewis Carroll's famous poem. US case law has only recognised limited intellectual property rights in invented names or fictional characters in exceptional cases. There is no modern English or Australian case which has recognised that titles, phrases, song and book titles should be granted copyright protection.

Publishers asserting copyright in headlines contend that compiling and arresting headlines involves a high degree of novelty and creativity, and that headlines should qualify as original literary works. To be a literary work, a work has to convey pleasure or afford enjoyment or instruction. A literary work must also be original, and to satisfy the test of originality it must be original not just in the sense of originating from an identifiable author rather than copied, but also original in the particular form of expression in which an author conveys ideas or information. This is because copyright is not meant to protect facts or ideas.

The question whether copyright can subsist in newspaper headlines was discussed briefly by a Judge in a Scottish case called Shetland Times Ltd v Wills [1997] FSH 604. The Judge didn't arrive at a final conclusion as to whether a newspaper headline can be a literary work, but expressed reservations about granting copyright to headlines, especially where they only provide a brief indication of the subject matter of the items they refer to in an article.

Newspaper headlines are similar in nature to titles of a book or other works and titles, slogans and short phrases which have been refused copyright protection. In the case of IceTV Pty Ltd v Nine Network Australia Pty Ltd [2009] HCA 14, the High Court held that no copyright can subsist in a programme title alone. The Courts have based their reasons for refusing copyright protection to such works both of the basis that they are too short (see Francis Day & Hunter Ltd v Twentieth Century Fox Corp Ltd (194) AC 112) or alternatively that titles of newspapers, songs, magazines, books, single words and advertising slogans lack sufficient originality to attract copyright protection.

The title 'Opportunity Knocks' for a game show was refused protection, as was the title "The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" for a song and "Splendid Misery" for a novel. Courts have also refused copyright protection for invented names such as Kojak and newspaper titles such as 'The Mirror'. Such titles and names may however be protected by other forms of intellectual property such as trademark law or the tort of passing off.

Whilst Courts have recognised that newspaper headlines may involve creative flair and be clever and engaging but represent little more than the fact or idea conveyed.

Fairfax Media Publications Pty Ltd v Reed International Books Australia Pty Ltd the Federal Court of Australia has ruled that newspaper headlines are not capable of copyright protection. Reed and collected and reproduced the news headlines and articles appearing in the Australian Financial Review on it's Abix subscription service. Fairfax alleged that by producing abstracts of the articles in their service Reed had infringed the copyright in a number of works, being the headlines as a separate literary work and in the headline and article together, as a 'combination work', all of the articles, headlines and bylines as a 'compilation' and also published edition copyright in each of the Australian Financial Review. The Court held that the headline was too trivial to be copyrightable and did not amount to a substantial part of the combination work so as to amount to infringement and the combination work didn't amount to a work of joint authorship.

The law in the United States is somewhat unsettled in relation to the rights of news aggreggators to engage in such activity due to the existence of the tort of unfair competition which is recognised in some US States.

The Court held that even had the use amounted to infringement it would have been excused by the defence of fair dealing.

Diabetes News - Use Flavonoids For Diabetic Complications

The beneficial effects of flavonoids in battling the complications of diabetes are numerous. They are even better than the nutrients vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc, because flavonoids are more potent against a wider range of oxidants.

newsboy hat

Diabetics who are already having signs of long-term complications can benefit from a flavonoid-rich extract. Flavonoids concentrate in specific tisses, so it is possible to take flavonoids that target specific body parts.

NEWS

- Bilberry extract is the best choice for retinopathy or cataracts.

- Ginkgo biloba extract is the best choice for improving blood flow to the legs.

- Grape seed extract is the best choice for poor wound healing and protection against heart disease.

- Quercetin is a good choice for prostate enlargement or bladder irritation.

There is tremendous overlap in the benefits of all flavoniod-rich extracts, the idea is to take one that is most specific to your personal needs.

Flavonoid-rich extracts don't get the publicity of drugs, but they can be just as effective and at far less cost. They can be far safer than drugs when used as directed.

Flavonoids increase intracellular vitamin C levels, decrease the leakiness and breakage of small blood vessels, prevent easy bruising, and have potent antioxidant effects.

Flavonoids are "nature's biological response modifiers" because of anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-viral, and anti-cancer properties.

Flavonoids are a group of plant pigments responsible for the bright colors of many fruits. That's why a diet that includes colorful fruit is so important to diabetics. You can't go wrong eating something that tastes good and is good for you.

After leaving Quebec, Maasdam visits Saguenay, Baie Comeau, and Gaspe, Prince Edward Island, Bar Harbor, and Gloucester. Passengers have three days at sea sailing the coast before they disembark in Fort Lauderdale.

Crown Princess passengers board the ship in Quebec City on October 17 and spend the evening berthed there. This lets them enjoy an evening ashore, drinking in the old-world ambience. Passengers can do more exploring the next day before Crown Princess leaves for Saguenay. Instead of visiting Bar Harbor and Gloucester, this voyage visits Boston and Newport, Rhode Island, where many of America's wealthiest families built mansions. En route to Fort Lauderdale, she calls at Norfolk Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina.

The most luxurious ship to offer fall foliage repositioning cruises, Crystal Symphony overnights in Montreal before sailing the next night for Quebec City. A vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a delightful old town, Montreal is noted for its nightlife. Crystal Symphony doesn't leave Quebec City until midnight, so passengers can spend the evening ashore there too. After calling at Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Portland, Maine, she overnights in Boston, and then calls at Newport before disembarking passengers in New York.

Prostate And Other Health Concerns For Men

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system just below the bladder. It surrounds part of the urethra, the canal that empties the bladder, and produces a fluid that forms part of semen. It is estimated that more than 234,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. One in 20 men will die of prostate cancer. With those numbers, it is imperative to know what you can do to prevent becoming a statistic.

What Steps Can Be Taken To Ensure Prostate Health?

NEWPORT

Men who have a diet that is high in red meat with little or no fruits and vegetables are at a higher risk for prostate cancer. Stimulants such as caffeine, coffee and chocolate are also bad for the prostate.Never ignore the urge to urinate. The longer you hold toxins in the bladder, the longer those toxins will be in contact with the prostate.Drinking purified water is also very important as dehydration stresses the prostate. It is also beneficial for males who have reproductive issues.Exercising the prostate through frequent sexual intercourse is beneficial in keeping the prostate from becoming stagnant. Colon cleansing as well as bladder cleansing is also very beneficial to maintaining prostate health.Regular prostate exams are recommended after age 40 or even younger. It is also recommended to have your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens) levels checked, which can be taken from the blood. PSA levels are an indication of the health of the prostate. The lower the number, the better off you are. Zero of course being the best number to have. Higher numbers may indicate prostate enlargement.
Natural Remedies What Are Beneficial For Prostate Health

Saw Palmetto is an herb that is very effective in relieving bladder problems. It is also effective in reducing inflammation and spasms in the prostate. Saw Palmetto also inhibits dihydrotestosterone, which causes cells in the prostate to multiply excessively. Flax Seed Oil, noted since 1941 for its benefits to the prostate, also improves fertility as well as libido. It also increases energy levels.Zinc is very important to prostate health and in maintaining a healthy prostate shape. Supplementation is recommended as 10 to 15 mg. of zinc is lost during each ejaculation.Red Root, found in Lymphomax, is helpful in relieving prostate discomfort.Nature's Sunshine's Men's Formula is an excellent daily supplement to enhance and protect prostate health.Gingko Biloba increases blood flow to the prostate and penis.Uva Ursi along with large amounts of Vitamin C is also beneficial for prostate health as it is an excellent bladder detoxifier.
Xenoestrogens

Xenoestrogens are man-made estrogens that can be found in food by-products, plastic, pesticides, household cleaning products, clothes and pharmaceuticals as well as many other sources. These xenoestrogens have a detrimental effect on men's health by causing an overload of estrogen in the body. Recent studies have shown a 600% increase of breast cancer in males as well as a decline in male fertility due to exposure to xenoestrogens. Osteoporosis is also a concern for men due to estrogen dominance.

Another health concern for men due to an overload of estrogen in the body is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. BPH is defined as an abnormal increase in the size of the prostate and has typically been seen in middle-aged to elderly men. Today, due to exposure to xenoestrogens, BPH is being found in men in their early 20's and even males in their teens.

As the prostate grows larger, it pressure against the bladder and urethra causing symptoms such as urinary frequency, urinary hesitancy and resistance which can lead to urinary tract infections.

Natural Ways To Combat Xenoestrogens

First and foremost, limit your exposure as much as possible by avoiding products which contain xenoestrogens.Using DHEA-M, an excellent nutritional supplement from Nature's Sunshine, helps to balance out estrogen dominance in males. It is also a great product for older men that are lacking virility and vitality. It also helps with depression. Using a low dosage natural progesterone cream such as Pro-G-Yam 5 mg is also effective. Men who have a chest that becomes "breast-like" due to estrogen dominance can benefit from using natural progesterone.
Peyronie's Disease

Another health concern for men is Peyronie's Disease, which is a circulation disorder of the penis that causes deteroriation of the penis shaft. This condition is typically found in men over 55 and can affect 1 to 3 men out of 100. Symptoms include pain with erection, indentation or bending of the penis as well as areas of plaque or hardened tissue.

Natural Remedies for Peyronie's Disease

A very effective natural therapy for Peyronie's if caught in the early stages of the disease is to mix 10% Ylang Ylang Essential Oil with 90% of a carrier oil such as Olive Oil. Apply this to the penis every time you go to the bathroom. This will help to stimulate circulation to the area.Flax Seed Oil is also beneficial as it thins the blood and improves circulation.Herbs such as Garlic and Capsicum also improve circulation.

An Introduction to Clarice Cliff

Clarice Cliff's talent and her close relationship with managing director Colley Shorter, her future husband, led to the Bizarre range and the Clarice Cliff brand. Clarice was given her own studio at Newport Pottery and a full-time paintress. Together they transformed tablewares that had been inherited when Wilkinson's bought Newport Pottery in 1920. This resulted in the birth of Bizarre, the first Clarice Cliff pattern. It consisted of simple geometric designs of coloured bands, triangles and diamonds and the pattern served well to disguise the indifferent quality of the pieces.

newport news catalog

Colley Shorter soon realised that he was looking at a fantastic marketing opportunity, there was not just the brandable personality of Clarice Cliff but also the concept of 'by women, for women' which would appeal to his predominantly female customers. Each piece has the inscription 'by Clarice Cliff' on its base and in 1930 Clarice was made Art Director of the Newport Pottery, the first woman in the Potteries to hold such a high position.

NEWPORT

The original Bizarre tableware was traditionally shaped as the underlying pieces were still in the shape of the Victorian fashion. Once this had all been used Clarice was able to design shapes that suited her modern, Art Deco inspired patterns.

While the Athens and Globe shapes were still fairly traditional her Conical shape was based on triangles, pyramids and cones and was very differnt from anything else on the market and therefore proved a huge success. Other potteries such as Shelley and Burgess & Leigh (the makers of Burleigh Ware) soon produced their own variations of the Clarice Cliff design.

Tea sets were among the most popular pieces and these were sold at modest prices for regular use. Particularly popular were the Early Morning or Tea for Two sets, comprising two cups and saucers, a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl and one side plate. These were designed for husband and wife to have early morning tea and toast or biscuits - hence the one plate for sharing. These Early Morning sets were popular wedding gifts. If you can find one of these in good condition you would probably have to pay several thousand pounds. Among the most popular teaware shapes is Stamford with its characteristic flat-sided teapot and solid handled cups. The angles and curves are the epitome of the Art Deco style and the flat-sided teapot was ideal for displaying the Clarice Cliff pattern.

She did not restrict herself to teaware, her pieces also include chargers, large jugs, pitchers and vases as well as figurines, masks, bookends, candlesticks and beakers. These were made in smaller quantities and were more expensive. They are therefore quite difficult to find and command a high price. The larger pieces provided a good canvas for Clarice Cliff patterns and they are highly desirable, especially the Lotus and Iris shapes - you would have to part with several thousand pounds if you can find one. A very fine example of her work is the Conical sugar sifter. If you can find a good example in a rare pattern it would cost over £1,000.

One of the instantly recognizable features of Clarice Cliff's pieces is its golden coloured glaze. This was known as Honeyglaze and was made by Wilkinson through the addition of one percent iron oxide to a clear glaze. Most of Clarice's work was glazed with Honeyglaze before being decorated. The coloured enamels were painted on after the piece had been glazed and fired, it was then fired again to harden the enamels.

Clarice Cliff designed around 2000 patterns, too numerous to mention here, but considered to be among her finest are Crocus, Red Broth, Luxor, Orange Melon and Trees andHouse. The prices have increased considerably over the last twenty years and you are unlikely to find a bargain. The fact that the public has been made aware of the value by popular TV antiques programmes is keeping the prices high. If you want to start collecting Clarice Cliff you should do some research and gain some understanding of her work. I would also suggest that you buy pieces from reputable dealers, as there are quite a few fakes on the market.

Kate Silverton, BBC's News Presenter, New Hairstyle

Kate is now wearing her hair in a hairstyle that was born out of the technique "Understanding Graduation", number three in the collection from one of the dvd's of Hairdresser-Training distant learning course.

newsboy hats for men

This dvd shows the subtle ways the Graduation technique can be used to assist current styles and trends.

NEWS

In the main, Graduation is only thought of in a traditional shape of the geometric haircut from the 70's, the "Mary Quant look", this is more commonly known as the Graduated Bob, recently re-created by Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice,in her new look that I recently described.

Graduation can be used in its subtle form to give lift to outlines on a haircut, such as Kate's haircut, or it can be used to assist the outline to create interesting shapes on a layered haircut. If you cast your mind back to the days of the 70-80's and the pop groups Duran Duran, and Spandu Ballet, you can see how graduation was used to give the shape from the outline to the longer layers of the lads haircuts.

To create the haircut, section the hair into quadrant sections parting the hair from, ear-to-ear and from the middle of the forehead to the middle at the nape area, making equal four sections.

Begin working on the side front section, either side, and cut an outline length with your 1st section, in Kate's hairstyle, around a inch from the bottom of the ear, cutting the hair as close to the head as possible. Then take the same section, holding the hair about an inch away from the head, cut around a quarter-of-an-inch off the same outline. This may seem strange but bare with me. The next section, comb down and hold this around an inch-and-a-half away from the head and cut, using the previous section as your guide, cut on the same line as you can see underneath. This is creating graduation, work up the head with your sections and pull farther away as you work through the side of the head.

Now do the exactly same that you have done at the side of the head, but do this at the back of the head, creating this graduation. Once the other side of the haircut has been completed, it just a matter of drying the hair with a round brush, but blowing the hair upwards to give an exaggerated look of the hair coming out from the head.

Kate's hair is then layer through the top sections, using medium length layers to give lift.

The technique shown on the dvds can then be used with a layering technique, (as used on Kate's haircut), that helps the hair spike upwards, almost defying gravity. When this is combined with the use of products to give added texture to the look and a "Ruffled look", you can then create the style Kate is now wearing.

Survival Strategy: Move from Fear to Faith by Getting to Know the Author and Finisher of Faith

As the sun goes down on your first day of entering into God's Dimension and Presence via prayer, remember how you began the day. Even though you still had periods of panic, you had the opportunity of being one with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

God's economy is not limited nor does it lean only toward the powerful and influential. "The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His" (2Chronicles 16:9)

The Author and Finisher of your faith is Jesus Christ, who not only holds that title but many others including God of All Grace and God of All Comfort.. As your day ends spend some time getting familiar with Him as your Comforter. It was in that role that our family was able to mentally survive the hardships of job losses and financial distress.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our tribulation that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." (2nd Corinthians 1: 3,4)

Virginia Museums - The Mariners Museum and Monitor Center in Newport News, VA

I'm going to take you on a brief tour of the Mariners' Museum, starting with actually getting to the place, and then through all the galleries, and ending with the Library - which contains the largest collection of maritime books and records in the United States, and is ideal for the maritime researcher.

newport brass

How Much Time Will You Need?

NEWPORT

If at all possible, plan to spend the whole day at the museum - there is that much to see, from the Mariners' Museum to the brand new Monitor Center.

Family members who get bored or need a break can eat a sandwich or dessert in the Compass Café (but not on Sundays or Mondays, and not after 2.30 pm, mark you!), rent a paddle boat and go for a paddle on Lake Maury, or go out for a walk on the Noland nature trail which winds around the lake. They could also browse in the large store, visit the Library, or play on a few wooden ships in the rear grounds of the museum. And if that's not enough, just about 20 yards away is the Peninsula Fine Arts Museum, for those of a less nautical and more artistic bent. (Although there is much of the artistic in the Mariners' Museum yourself, as you will see.)

Museum Drive

The Mariners' Museum is located off the intersection between J. Clyde Morris Blvd and Warwick Blvd. (See Directions at the end of this article.) For the purpose of this article, I shall assume that you'll approach the Museum by driving (or biking) south along J. Clyde Morris (which starts out in York County as George Washington Memorial Highway, and is also called Highway 17).

When you stop at the intersection between J. Clyde and Warwick Blvd., you will see on your right hand side, on the other side of Warwick, a 30-foot tall statue of Christopher Newport, captain of the Susan Constant which brought the settlers to Jamestown in 1607. This statue marks the entrance to Christopher Newport University.

Three Lanes of Traffic

Going south, J. Clyde Morris has three lanes - the far left lane is to turn left onto Warwick, the far right lane is to turn right onto Warwick. You want to be in the middle lane. When the light turns green, drive straight across Warwick Blvd, and get into the far left lane at this point, because you'll be turning left onto Museum Drive. (The road itself continues on to the University.)

The sign for the Museum turning will be on your right hand side, on your left hand side you'll see a statue of Leif Ericson (about half the size of the Newport statue, but still impressive), which used to be inside the Museum.

Parking Lot

Unless there's some function going on, the many parking lots will not be filled up. There's probably no reason, therefore, to turn into the first parking lot that you'll see on your right. You'll want to park here only if you intend to use only the Noland Trail, a nature trail that winds along Lake Maury. This is of use only for walkers, bikes are not allowed. (There are several starting points for the Noland Trail, this is just one of them.)

There is plenty of parking space right by the museum, either on your right hand side as you drive up to it, or behind it. If you're going to be using the Library, you'll want to park in this back parking lot.

Back Entrance

The back entrance is only for museum people. However, you'll want to take a walk to this back entrance, to see the bas relief murals flanking the doors. They feature nautical scenes, from a mermaid to a fisherman to the god of the sea.

A couple of ship replicas -made out of wood - pretty much featureless and simply designed for kids to run and jump on - are in the back grounds. The Library is also located just a little further on down the sidewalk. Across the parking lot is the Peninsula Fine Arts Museum.

Front Entrance

You'll walk in through the front entrance. On your left hand side you'll see a little strip of water on which reside the paddle boats. If you walk down to take a closer look, and look up at the museum itself, you'll see the life-size replica of the Monitor as it stands outside the Monitor Center.

Walk through the entrance hall, and on your right you'll see the Compass Café, with its offerings of various kinds of sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. You can eat your food in the Café, or take it outside and dine beside the water (depending on the weather, of course.)

Then you'll see the Museum Store, which is quite large and has a vast selection of books for adults and children, puzzles and games, figurines, clothing, and so on.

Then you'll come to the actual entry into the museum. Hopefully, if there's lots of people trying to get in, there'll be at least two people working the registers. Prices are subject to change, but at the time of this writing it costs .50 for adults and .50 for children, except for those under five years who are free.

Kidstuff

You know your kids best. Will they be interested in the exhibits they're seeing, just because, or will they need tasks to do and games to play to keep them occupied? If so, you'll be able to check out a "Seabag" at the front desk, which contains stuff designed to keep your kid interested as you walk around the museum. Heck - you may even find stuff of interest in there yourself!

Docents and Events

There are generally docents standing by here to talk to any visitors who approach them. On the counter you'll also find a map of the Museum, as well as brochures for other attractions in the area. Make sure you ask the Museum representative if there is anything special going on that day. Usually there are no signs to announce special talks (as for example, at the time of this writing, every Saturday at 1 pm for the next three months a sailor will be standing by in the Officers Wardroom of the Monitor Gallery to give a talk about what life was like on the Monitor during the Civil War. But if you didn't know he was going to be there....you wouldn't know he was going to be there, as there are no signs to tell you so!)

A gigantic golden eagle, figurehead of the USS Lancaster, will immediately catch your eye in the foyer. Beside that figurehead is the entrance to the John L. Roper Theater, in which various short films are continuously shown. (Ask at the desk to see what's on offer that day.)

What To See First

This all depends on how much time you have. The USS Monitor Center has only recently been opened and the main influx of visitors go there. There is so much to see and read that one is quite tired out by the time one finishes, so you might just grab a snack at the Compass Café and then go - thereby missing the rest of the museum, which of course has a lot to offer. What I would suggest is that you spend half a day visiting the Mariners Museum, and the other half visiting the Monitor Center, taking breaks as needed to refresh yourself.

Chesapeake Bay Gallery

I'm going to start this written tour and take you in a clockwise direction. First, turn left and walk through the Chesapeake Bay Gallery. The first thing you'll see is a first order Fresnel lens, which used to stand in a local lighthouse. Usually the light is going, and provides a nice bit of ambience.

The Chesapeake Bay Gallery takes you, quickly, from Virginia as it was pre-human arrival, to the first Native Americans, to the arrival of the Europeans. Blackbeard and pirates are mentioned briefly. A much larger section is given over to the fishermen of the 30s and 40s and the crabbing industry. Various examples of boats and equipment are on view. Go to the end of the gallery and up the steps and retrace your steps along the Recreational Boating area, with all kinds of photos on the walls depicting life on the water as it was during various long-past time periods.

The Monitor Center

Clockwise after the Chesapeake Bay Gallery is the USS Monitor Center. I'm going to hold this off for last, so you'll see the topic header much further below in this article.

The Age of Exploration Gallery

Instead of going to the Monitor Center right now, and instead of going into whatever "Changing Exhibition" might be on offer in the gallery straight in front of you, go right, into the Age of Exploration Gallery, so that you can take things chronologically. (It was here that the Leif Ericson statute used to stand.)

This gallery is chock full of ancient navigational tools, models of boats, paintings and statues of various explorers, as well as little TV screens where you can listen to information given on various topics.

The Nelson Touch

Once you're through with the Age of Exploration Gallery, you'll enter The Nelson Touch, an exhibit given over to Admiral Horatio Nelson, the romantic hero with one eye and one arm who saved England at the Battle of Trafalgar, only to be struck down by a sniper's bullet at the moment of his triumph.

Defending the Seas

Once through The Nelson Touch you'll be in the first of a long series of galleries given over to the naval sea power of the United States, from the War of 1812 to the Civil War (with a replica of the Monitor turret there), to World War II (with alcoves kitted out as briefing rooms and submarine control rooms) to the modern day - consisting of a model of the Trieste, and a single corner, glassed in, displaying a Gemini-era space suit and the overalls worn by Alan Shepard.

But you are not done yet.

Great Hall of Steam

Continue out of the Defending the Seas Gallery and walk to your left, through a room with various seascapes hanging on its walls. (This used to be where the old "Café" was.) On your right will be bathrooms, if needed. You'll come out into a foyer. To your left is the Great Hall of Steam.

The Titanic

On your right, as you enter the room, is a very small exhibit featuring The Titanic, all that is left of an exhibit from 1998.

Then you'll walk through a vast selection of miniature ships - which are actually quite large - modern ships from the age of steam, and a working replica, in miniature, of a steam engine. Jutting out from the walls are various intricately carved and painted figureheads.

At the end of this gallery, to your left, is the Crabtree Miniature Ships Gallery. Now, these ships are ancient sailing ships, made all out of wood by one man, August Crabtree. They took him a lifetime to build. There is also an alcove in which a brief documentary of Crabtree and his work is shown.

Ship Modelmaker

Most days, between 10 am and 5 pm, with time off for breaks and lunch, you'll find a ship modelmaker in a little alcove just off the Crabtree Gallery. He works on his ships, and is delighted to stop and talk to anyone who comes by and wants to learn more about the hobby. Brochures are on offer there for the Hampton Roads Model Ship Society, founded in 1967. Their website is http://www.hrsms.org.

Changing Exhibitions

Now that you're done with the Great Hall of Steam, you'll find yourself in a gallery given over to exhibitions that change periodically. These exhibits can be displays of photos or paintings on a certain topic, to all out displays with artifacts and clothing of various kinds. The most recent exhibitions have been: By the Sea, Captain John Smith Four Hundred Project, Ironclad Evidence, Life's a Beach, The Monitor Revisited, and Swashbuckler: The Romance of the Pirate.

Walk through that gallery to the end, and you'll find yourself back in the entrance foyer. Is it time now to go to the Monitor Center?

Well, that depends on your taste, and how much energy you have left.

Boatbuilding and International Small Craft Center

If you like, you can go out of the doors into the fresh air and walk to the International Small Craft Center. On your way, you'll pass a building given over to boatbuilding - craftsmen building wooden ships the old-fashioned way. Inside the International Small Craft Center is a vast collection of small boats from around the world - and even includes a bathysphere. There is also a research room within - consisting of a couple of computers hooked up to the library archives. Chris Craft enthusiasts can find information here - but more information at the Mariners Museum Library.

Okay, now it's time to go to the Monitor Center.

The Monitor Center

The Monitor Center, which had its Grand Opening in March, 2007, is home to the artifacts brought up from the USS Monitor, the ironclad that successfully defended Union ships at the Battle of Hampton Roads against the USS Virginia (or Merrimac), but then sank off North Carolina when it was being towed down the coast in December, 1862.

The wreckage of the Monitor was found in 1973, and the site was declared a marine sanctuary - America's first. However, the wreck had been, and still is, deteriorating so much that it was decided to bring as many artifacts and pieces of the wreck ashore as possible, conserve them, and put them on display at the Monitor Center. In 2003 came the crowning point, when the famous Monitor turret was lifted from the ocean floor and brought to the Mariners Museum, where it has been undergoing conservation ever since.

What to See First?

The Monitor Center is laid out, for the most part, in chronological order. First you walk through exhibits chronicling the building (of the CSS Virginia), and then you see what life was life aboard the Monitor, and then the sinking, and finally, the recovery. Depending on if you're interest is the history of the Monitor and the Civil War, or the complexities of wreck recovery, you'll either go slowly from beginning to end, or walk swiftly through the opening exhibits to get to the Large Artifact Gallery.

First, you'll walk through the hallway connecting the Monitor center to the Mariners Museum. You'll have a choice of turning left into a little room where there is a 5 minute film, a re-enaction of the sinking of the Monitor off Cape Hatteras, and then you'll continue on into a brief history of ships from wood to steel, and then you'll be in the "real deal," the galleries focusing on the Monitor. Or - you can continue to walk down the hallway to see what's in the Daily Press (our local newspaper's ) changing gallery - typically an exhibit of photographs, or keep on going to the Batten Conservation Complex where you can see the turret and various other large pieces of machinery in their tanks - where they soak in water specially treated with chemicals in order to preserve the brittle metal. Walking to the end, you turn left and thus come to the Large Artifact Gallery from the other side.

The CSS Virginia

Lets turn left into the film room first, and walk through that, and into a large gallery which shows men at work on the CSS Virginia - the raised wreck of the Merrimac that had been scuttled, ineffectively, in Gosport Shipyard.

From there you enter the galleries with artifacts and information about the Monitor, from its building (and indeed, there's a computer where you can build an ironclad of your own and see if it floats) to its crew. The Battle Theater has a 15-minute film running continuously recreating the battle of Hampton Roads.

Large Artifact Gallery

The Large Artifact Gallery consists of two floors. Some items still being conserved will be placed on the first floor, which recreates the engine room of the Monitor, while the turret will eventually be placed on the second floor.

Right now, there are two turrets there - one showing the turret as it looked after recovery - upside down, encrusted with marine life, with artifacts piled in heaps on the floor/ceiling along with mud and marine encrustation, and the other showing the turret as it originally was.

The history of the recovery of the turret, and other artifacts from the Monitor, are given in this gallery as well, with lots of TV screens to watch as the people involved speak about their activities.

At the end of the Gallery is the Recovery Theater, which has a film running every 25 minutes or so, about the actual recovery of the turret. The film is narrated by Sam Waterston, and is somewhat interactive, you can press buttons on your armrests to say yes or no to various questions.

Standing in the Large Artifact Gallery, facing the Recovery Theater, look to your right. In the middle of the courtyard is a gleaming white, eight-legged "spider." This construct is what was used to pick up the turret from the ocean floor. On the wall of the building beyond is the silhouette of the Monitor, to size, so that you get a sense of where you're standing "inside" the Monitor.

Look to your left. Outside the windows is a full-size replica of the Monitor. You can walk up and down its length and get some idea of the size of the ship. Unfortunately, you can't go inside. Because it's on land, it's classified as a building, and building codes would not allow the construction of an interior replica.

After watching the film in the Recovery Theater, it's time to go to the Batten Conservation Complex. Only actual workers are allowed inside this complex, but there are windows on both floors for you to see what is happening inside.

Know Before You Go

The goal of any museum is to tell you what you need to know when you're in the museum. And the Monitor Center (as well as the Mariners' Museum) has excellent explanatory placards everywhere. But you will get so much more pleasure out of the experience if you are actually familiar with the topics before you enter the museum - the information will stay with you longer and your brain won't be quite so fatigued after a day of soaking in information!

How To Get There

The Mariners' Museum is located at 100 Museum Drive, in Newport News, VA, 23606. For precise directions from your starting point - be it a hotel or private home, please check one of the many map and direction websites available on the web.

Exhibits change on a regular basis, so check the website at http://www.mariner.org to see what's new.

Opening and Closing

The museum is open from Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. It is open on Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM. It is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Better Safe Than Sorry

The phone number for the museum is 757-596-2222. I'm going to suggest that you call the Museum before you set out to ensure that it is open. This may seem like a waste of time, but I actually had the experience this summer of dropping in to visit the museum only to discover it was closed because of a power outage caused by a storm the night before! Now that's probably a once-in-a-lifetime event -- I've been to the Museum dozens of times in the last several years and this was the first time it had ever happened!, nevertheless it doesn't take long to make the call and it will save any disappointment later.

Fees

NEWPORT

The operators of some of the best OC photography beaches are well aware of their attraction for photographers. An example of a terrific beach for taking portraits that charges is Crystal Cove State Park located a couple miles west of Newport Coast. To bring in extra money to pay for their operations, they require a professional photographer to pay a fee each time they shoot on the beach.

Obtaining the license takes time. Therefore, if your client wishes to book a session there within the week, you may not have time to obtain the license and should so advise the client. Additionally, unless your business strategy allows you to recoup this fee by marking up your prices, you should advise your client that they will be responsible for the fee if they choose that particular beach.

Local Tides

Most beach locations have a number of terrific settings in which to shoot. However, many a photographer has arrived at her destination and to her horror realized that to utilize the terrific backdrop she had in mind her client must stand in three feet of water (please do not suggest that your clients do this - unless that is the look you want and it is the last pose of the day!).

When you are at a beach and are observing the available opportunities, note the time of day and the date on which you observed these opportunities. Then, when you get home you will be able calculate roughly how high the tide was at that time and find the time of day the tide will roughly be the same height on the day of your shoot. This will made for a more relaxing experience for both the photographer and her client.

Unique Beach Portrait Opportunities

Before shooting at a particular location for the first time, identify the locations that will provide the look you are seeking. Visit the location and note the terrain. Visit the blogs of other photographers and see what has worked for them when shooting in that particular location.

For example, at Woods Cove in Laguna Beach there is a terrific stone wall which many photographer use as a backdrop. The wall provides a rustic look that works well with black and white and sepia prints.

At Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach, there is a stone walkway which is surrounded by flowers much of the year. This is a perfect spot to take shoot a standing couple or a sitting toddler.

At Victoria beach there is a stone structure that looks like the tower from a medieval European castle. A terrific shot for this involves the subjects stand below the tower while the shot is taken from a distance.

Preparation is the key to a successful OC beach portrait session. A professional photographer should manage the local fees, local tides and unique location opportunities!
